Welcome New Parents: Troop 888 welcomes you as parents of our newest scouts. Since Boy Scouts is considerably different from the Pack you just came from, some valuable information is provided here about the policies and procedures of Troop 888.
Uniform Policy: Troop 888's policy is consistent with national BSA policy. All scouts are required to have a complete uniform when participating in Troop activities. As a minimum, the following items are required:
BSA shirt with appropriate insignia (council patch, troop number, patrol emblem, rank patch, etc.) BSA shorts/pants BSA socks Belt with buckle
The activity uniform consists of a scouting-related T shirt, BSA shorts, BSA socks, and a scout hat. Troop T shirts are available for purchase.
BSA Handbook: Each scout is required to have his BSA handbook as soon as possible after joining the Troop. The Boy Scout Handbook contains critical information that each scout needs to participate in the scouting program. Rank advancement is recorded in The Boy Scout Handbook and must be presented for Scoutmaster's Conference and Board of Review.
Registration/Dues: There is a one time registration fee of $25. Quarterly dues are $20. The Troop Treasurer is responsible for the collection of all monies. Annual recharter fees and Boys Life subscription are included in these fees.
Troop Camping: An active camping program is a key element to Troop 888's outdoor program. The Troop normally schedules one campout each month. Monthly Troop campouts start late Friday afternoon and end on Sunday morning. Parents of new scouts should refer to The Boy Scout Handbook for a listing of personal gear and clothing required for each scout. Scouts are required to have their own sleeping bag and tent (if they don't want to share with someone else).
Troop Permission Slips are required for each outing. Signed permission slips must be returned prior outing.
Camping fees are generally paid by the Troop, but may be additional depending on the campout location and other activity fees. Camp fees may be refunded except where activity has a "no refund" policy. Each patrol is responsible for planning its own menu and purchasing food with adult supervision. Typical food budgets are $7-10 per person. Once food is purchased, money is not refundable. It is our troop policy that money should never be a reason why a scout should not participate in a campout. For this reason, we have established a campership fund. However, a scout receiving campership funds from the Troop is expected to participate fully in all Troop fundraisers. Questions regarding these policies may be addressed to the adult leadership.
